Preoperative Considerations
Anesthesia/Positioning:
- Supine
- Sniffing position
- If awake nasal fiberoptic intubation, can have patient sitting up
Other:
- Contraindicated with cranial base fractures
- Also inquire about hx of nasal trauma, surgery, etc.
Armamentarium:
- Nasal endotracheal tube (regular or Rae)
- Lubricating Jelly
- Nasopharyngeal airway "nasal trumpet"
- McGill forcep
- Laryngoscope (conventional or video)
- Fiberoptic scope if awake intubation
- Tape or suture to secure nasal tube
